Conservation
All is not well in Corbett. The belief that Corbett is free from
poachers
has been dramatically jolted with an increasing number of elephant poaching
incidents.
Conservationists are asking for stricter protection and that forest officers
be given the necessary equipment and funds to fight vested interests. They have
also been championing protection for the forest corridor between Corbett and
the Rajaji National Parks, to enable elephants and tigers to migrate.
The Ramganga River Project at Kalagarh has led to wetlands replacing grassland
habitats over an extensive area. This has caused changes in the mix of animals
and plants, but not enough research has been done on this aspect of the forest
character. Fires are a perennial problem and a network . of fire-lines has
been created. Controlled fires are used as a management tool to maintain grasslands
and control accumulated dry leaf litter along fire lines.
Lantana and Canabis compete with palatable plant species and the management
wages a constant battle to bring these under control. The tourist complex at
Dhikala is a major source of disturbance appropriating a sizeable chunk of
prime grassland habitat. Plastic and toxic litter is also a major problem
thanks to the actions of less-aware tourists.
Dynamiting and illicit netting of fish in the Ramganga, particularly on the
outskirts, is a real problem. Water shortages in summer sometimes cause animals
to move to peripheral areas of the park where they are at risk from poachers.
Waterholes have been artificially constructed at various localities throughout
the park to prevent this.
What can you do for conservation ?
1) Do not litter - take only photographs & leave only footprints
2) Do not smoke in forest areas - cigarette butts cause forest fires.
3) Do not buy items made from wild animalproducts - the demand from consumers
encourages
poachers.
4) Be a responsible citizen - report any unusual activities to the Park Authorities.
5) Enjoy wildlife & wild places - they survive only if you & your childern
want them to.
Plastic bags are indiscrimate killers of wildlife.
Please do not carry or throw plastic in forest areas.
