Wild Expeditions India
Wildlife Watching
Best time to Visit :
November - March. The park is open to visitors between
November 15 and June 15. During the monsoons, roads are not motorable' as the
rivers are prone to violent flash floods that can cut off access for days on
end.
Getting Around :
Visitors must get permits to enter the park. The Park Administration Centre
based at Ramnagar issues these. A booking chit is issued, which must be shown
at the Dhangari Gate.
At the Amdanda Gate, permits are issued for day trips to Bijrani. The best way
to visit the park is on four-wheel drive vehicles, which can be rented on a
per day basis from Ramnagar.
Sunrise and sunset elephant rides to the park start from Dhikala. Four people
share a ride on a first-come first-served basis (It's worth it to come early
and wait).
Water Holes & Trails :
The park management has constructed some of the
most imaginatively located observation towers. This is one of the best ways
to watch wildlife without causing disturbances. Easily accessible is the lookout
tower just one kilometre from Dhikala. Armed with a pair of binoculars, a comfortable
cushion and sleeping bag, some food and water and plenty of silence, you could
just come away with the experience of your lifetime. One visitor saw as many
as five tigers (a mother with four full-grown cubs) come to drink at a waterhole
at the same time.
Another saw an amazing encounter between a tiger and an elephant.
The chaur at Dhikala is picturesque and abuzz with wildlife. Go on elephant
back into this sea of grass in search of the unexpected. Smaller creatures and
birds are flushed out as you move along. You have a whole range of ways to enjoy
Corbett, but you should remember to always take a guide along with you, either
on elephant back or in a four-wheel drive vehicle, if you really want to give
yourself the best chance to enjoy the park.
En route from the Dhangari gate to Dhikala, to the right of the road, is 'Highbank',
from where you may see resting muggers and gharial crocodiles in the river.
Visit Kanda, the highest point, for a spectacular view at all times of the year,
except when it is clouded in mist (when it has a charm all its own). The old
forest rest house in Kanda used to have a visitors' book in which Jim Corbett's
entries at Kanda and Mohan were recorded. These places are bound to provide
added excitement to those who have read his shikar stories.
Kalagarh reservoir attracts waterbirds, mugger and gharial. The mahseer and malee
fish breed here in Corbett.
Taking a Break :
32 km. From RamNagar on the Nainital Road, past
Kaladhungi,is
Jim Corbett's old house, which has been turned into a Museum. An Orientation
Centre at Bijrani and a restaurant is worth a visit.
At Dhikala, wildlife films are shown free every evening in the open area behind
the canteen. The restaurant serves a delicious breakfast. Try it after a morning
round in the chaur.
Insider Trips :
The park has several entrance gates. The closest is Amdanda gate, which leads
to the camp at Bijrani, one kilometre away frbm Ramnagar. Good for a day trip.
Dhangari gate is about 18 km. from Amdanda towards Ranikhet and accesses the
northern and northwestern side of the park, along the Ramganga valley and the
camp at Dhikala. Give yourself enough time to visit all the different areas
of the park.
For birdwatchers, a book on the birds of Corbett would be a good accompaniment.
April, May and June are great months for wildlife photographers.
If visiting in winter, make sure you are well-equipped with warm clothes. All
entrance gates close at sunset. So time yourself accordingly. Night driving
is strictly not permitted.
